Happy New Year!
Hope you had a wonderful 2017 and wishing you an even better 2018.
As great of a year as I had last year and as excited as I am for the new year, the last couple days of 2017 and first couple days of 2018 were a bit rough for me. I just spent the last few days fighting off a cold.
While my friends and family were toasting in the new year with champagne, I took a shot of NyQuil on New Year’s Eve (well before midnight) and woke up to a new year. Not quite what I had in mind as to how I wanted to end and start the year, but I am glad I am feeling better now and I am ready to kick things off.
My Goals for 2018
1. Sleep at least 7 hours a night
While I did finally start sleeping more last year, there were still nights I slept less than the recommended 7 to 8 hours.
As my continued effort for good health, I want to make getting sufficient sleep a focus for me this year. To ensure I meet my goal, I have adopted a bedtime ritual (electronics off by 9pm and chitchat with Mrs. PWDW/read for an hour) and a set bedtime (10pm).
2. Exercise at least twice a week
I started being more active last year by doing simple things like taking the stairs instead of using the elevator and parking further away from the entrance so I can walk more.
However, as my continued effort for good health, I want to take it a step further this year. I want to make sure I schedule in time to do 30 to 45 minutes of heart-pumping exercise at least twice a week. Given my current schedule, I plan to exercise on the weekends.
3. Read at least 5 books
I strongly believe that investing the time on self improvement by reading and educating yourself on different topics is one of the best things you can ever do for yourself.
I just barely met my goal of reading 4 books last year, but I am sure glad I did. This year I want to step it up a bit and try to read at least 5 books but hoping I can read even more.
4. Bring lunch to work everyday
Mrs. PWDW and I started bringing lunch to work more last year and it felt great when we did. It was as good for our health as it was for our wallets.
The problem was there were times we didn’t plan ahead and we would have days or weeks when we didn’t have anything to bring and ended up buying lunch. Or we would purposely not bring lunch so we can eat together (we work less than 8 minutes away from each other).
We plan to bring lunch to work everyday this year. And on days when we can meet up for lunch, we will just bring our lunches to a nearby park so we can eat together.
5. Cook more (and less takeaway and dining out)
Mrs. PWDW and I are absolute foodies. We love to try new restaurants and new cuisines just as much as we crave delicious dishes from our favorite go-to restaurants. Unfortunately, being foodies can prove to be quite expensive and even unhealthy at times.
So we plan to cook more and dine out less this year. Though we really need to learn how to make those delicious dishes from our favorite places.
6. Spend more time with family
Since my son was born two years ago, I started working even harder to make more money and achieve financial freedom. Unfortunately, that caused me to sleep less and stress more. My doctors believe that both these factors along with my sedentary lifestyle led to my health scares and anxiety attacks.
As a result, I spent most of last year winding down my hustle quite a bit and focused on getting healthy. The problem was I spent the first year sacrificing everything to try to get ahead financially and the second year I was sacrificing things to get healthy again.
This year I am ready to work hard again and absolutely crush it. However, I want to make sure I do it without sacrificing health or time with my family. I sat down with Mrs. PWDW and we agreed to make Saturdays family day and spend the day doing things as a family while Sundays will be my dedicated work/hustle days. I am also trying to shuffle things around on weeknights so we can spend an hour or so together as a family.
7. Blog at least twice a week
When I first launched PWDW, I was blogging twice a week with the plans to increase to blogging 3 times a week. Unfortunately, I had to scale this way down to just twice a month so I can focus on my health. I also ended up taking a little over 2 months hiatus from the site after FinCon so I can get reorganized and refocused.
With my renewed energy and focus, I plan to start by blogging once a week first and gradually get back to twice a week again by February or March.
8. Increase blog traffic
This was one of the areas that I neglected last year. I was more focused on publishing quality content than I was on tracking my blog traffic. I knew people were visiting the site because I was getting comments and receiving emails, but don’t know just how much traffic I was getting.
One of my focuses this year will be to start tracking blog traffic and figure out how to increase it.
9. Figure out our next move in real estate investing
We just closed on our first investment property last month. We will give it some time to see how it goes but would definitely like to figure out how to add more properties to our portfolio. While we doesn’t necessarily have to add any new properties this year, I would definitely like to have a plan or strategy by the end of this year.
10. Add two more income streams/side hustles
Our current income streams are our paychecks, dividends from stocks, rental income (cash flow) from our newly acquired investment property, and Mrs. PWDW’s new side business (she started a travel agency towards the end of last year).
While I believe saving money and investing are keys to financial freedom, I firmly believe that making more money significantly helps accelerate the process. So my goal for this year is to add two more income streams – hopefully passive ones but if not then through side hustles.
I am super excited about the new year and I can’t wait to absolutely crush it.
What are your goals for 2018? Do you have any specific ones you want to achieve this year?
